​When writing an online article or blog post, if you are wondering whether you should add an image to your post, the answer will always be “YES!”.  Images make an online article or blog post more meaningful and can actually contribute to improving your SEO.  In this post, you will learn the steps that should be taken to fully optimize an image for SEO.

Tip #1:  Use Descriptive File Names

The name of your image file gives Google clues about the subject matter of the image.  The more information the Search Engine crawlers find on your page, the better your ranking results will be.  Try to making your file name a simple but good description of the subject matter of the image.  For example, lake-lanier-social-media.jpg is more effective than IMG000773.JPG.

Descriptive file names can also be useful to visitors to your website:  If Google is unable to find appropriate text, in the page where computer bots find the image, Google will use the file name as the image's sample in the search results.
